QuickBooks vs. free filing tools: do you need both?
Updated for the 2026 filing season
QuickBooks isn't free tax-filing software, it's bookkeeping software aimed at self-employed people and small businesses. If you landed here looking for a free way to file, this is about where QuickBooks actually fits versus what you probably need instead.
What QuickBooks Self-Employed actually does
- Tracks mileage, expenses, and income throughout the year
- Estimates quarterly tax payments as you go
- Exports directly into TurboTax at filing time (same parent company, Intuit)
What it doesn't do
It doesn't file your return by itself, and it isn't free. If your actual need is a once-a-year free filing tool rather than year-round bookkeeping, QuickBooks is solving a different problem than the one you have.
If you just need to file
For 1099/gig income with no year-round bookkeeping need, Cash App Taxes or FreeTaxUSA cover Schedule C without a subscription.
