IRS Free File: income limits and participating providers
Updated for the 2026 filing season
IRS Free File isn't a single piece of software, it's a program that routes eligible taxpayers to guided free filing through private partners. The partner list changed for 2026, so it's worth checking before assuming a provider you've used before is still in it.
The income cutoff
Generally, a 2025 adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less qualifies for the program, though individual partners can set a stricter limit within that ceiling.
2026 participating partners
- 1040.com
- 1040Now
- EzTaxReturn
- FileYourTaxes.com
- FreeTaxUSA
- OnLine Taxes
- TaxAct
- TaxSlayer
Notably absent
TurboTax and H&R Block both left the traditional Free File program. Their free tiers still exist, just directly through their own sites rather than through IRS.gov. Read what changed and why.
