Intuit and H&R Block left IRS Free File: what that means

Updated for the 2026 filing season

TurboTax and H&R Block both opted out of the traditional IRS Free File program. That doesn't mean their free tiers disappeared, it means you can no longer reach them by starting from IRS.gov.

What changed

The IRS Free File program is a coalition of private-sector partners offering guided free filing to taxpayers under an income cutoff, accessed by starting through IRS.gov. TurboTax and H&R Block are no longer part of that coalition.

What didn't change

Practical takeaway

If your income is under the Free File cutoff and you specifically want the IRS.gov-routed version, pick from the eight remaining partners on the Free File guide. If you’re fine going directly to TurboTax or H&R Block’s own site, their free tiers are unaffected by this change.
