H&R Block Free Online: eligibility and limits
Updated for the 2026 filing season
H&R Block opted out of the traditional IRS Free File program, so its free tier now lives only on its own site. It covers simple W-2 returns and includes a few conveniences the bare-bones competitors don't.
Who qualifies for free
- W-2 income only
- Standard deduction
- Limited interest and dividend income
- Unemployment income (Form 1099-G)
- Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit
What triggers an upgrade
- 1099 freelance or gig income (Schedule C)
- Itemized deductions
- HSA contributions or distributions
- Investment sales
| Federal | Free for simple returns |
|---|---|
| State | Included free with the simple-return tier |
| Free File Alliance | No longer a participant |
If you don't qualify
Freelance or 1099 income is the most common upgrade trigger here. Cash App Taxes covers Schedule C at no cost if that applies to you.
