What happens when your “free” plan stops being free
Updated for the 2026 filing season
The most common complaint about free tax software isn't the price of the paid tier, it's discovering the upgrade requirement after you've already entered half your return.
Common triggers, across most providers
- Uploading a 1099 for freelance or gig income
- Adding itemized deductions instead of the standard deduction
- Reporting investment sales (Schedule D)
- Claiming certain credits the free tier doesn't cover
How to avoid it
Check a provider's stated eligibility list against your actual situation before starting, not after. Most providers let you preview the upgrade price before charging you, but by then you've usually already spent the time re-entering data elsewhere would require starting over.
Better approach
If your return includes 1099 income, start with a provider that includes it free from the beginning, like Cash App Taxes or FreeTaxUSA, rather than risking an upgrade mid-return elsewhere.
